How can I upload a gif image on youtube?

There are two things I want to upload a gif image on youtube, my profile background and my user default picture.
Default picture:
Do I have to upload it as a video? If I have to, how do I turn a gif image to a video?

Background:
I tried uploading the image from my computer. I have all the codes and direct link. But when I tried uploading it to youtube straight from my computer, it doesn’t work.
